Social Media has come a hell of a long way over the last decade.
From its infancy in the 1990’s when it was predominantly a one way street in terms of being able to interact with the users posting information, in fact most of the social media channels at that time evolved around simply one-way bulletin boards, information websites and personal online diaries.
As we hit the millennium and into the early 2000’s we started to see the increase in interactive Social Media websites such as Blogger, Wikipedia, MySpace, LinkedIn and Facebook. This interactiveness really brought about the huge rise in popularity of the channels due to the fact users from every corner of the world could now post information to friends, family and colleagues and get a response.
From the mid-2000’s on we have see unimaginable growth of several of the major players in the Social Media space, such as Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, LinkedIn, YouTube and Google+ to name a few.
The continued growth of these channels has been down to several main reasons:
- The huge improvement and availability of better connectivity speeds.
- The fact that all of the best Social Media channels are FREE.
- The continual increase in impressive functionality that make it so easy to use whenever and wherever you want !
At the time of writing, Facebook has over 1.8 billion active users, which is a phenomenal number and one that doesn’t look to be toppled any time soon.
This Social Media trend and growth looks to continue well into the next decade and with the introduction of VR and continually improved technology, the prospects look great for the Social Media world.
